A stabilizer inhibits degradation of polymers. This degradation could happen due to light, heat or oxygen. Stabilizers are key components of additive systems. They provide better resistance to impact, increased or reduced hardness, control of blocking, and improved processing conditions. They also facilitate higher resistance to flame. Heat stabilizers are of great use in PVC products, CR products, and others. They increase the plastic’s overall ability to withstand harm due to high heat. Heat degradation is prevented either by interfering with the chain propagation process or by destroying hydroperoxide groups. Of all the polymers, PVC is the largest beneficiary of heat stabilizers. Its wide applications ranging from medical devices and toys to credit cards and coats for wires & cables trigger considerable demand for heat stabilizers. China produced nearly 600,000 tons of heat stabilizers in 2008. While the global economic meltdown had an adverse effect on the domestic stabilizer market, the following years seem to have marked a revival. Light stabilizers are chemical compounds that intervene in the chemical and physical processes of light-induced degradation. They are of various types, namely, UV (Ultra-Violet) absorbers, quenchers of excited states, free radical scavengers, and hydroperoxide decomposers. Light stabilizers are required in PE products, PP products, PS products, PVC products, PU products, and rubber products. Commercially used antioxidants include metallic salts (barium zinc, barium cadmium), organometallic compounds (tin-based), epoxies (soya bean oil derivatives), etc. Key consumers of antioxidants are PP products, PE products, ABS resin products, PC products, and others. The choice of stabilizers depends upon various factors comprising costs, regulatory approvals, and technical requirements of a particular PVC product. Tin-based products are largely used for roofing, rigid wrapping films, drinking waste, etc. China is expected to generate huge demand in the overall stabilizer market from 2018 to 2023 (forecast period). It is a key producer as well as consumer of stabilizers. This may be attributed to its robust economy, high industrial output, and capital investments. Leading Chinese vendors of stabilizers are Shanxi Jiaocheng County Fuli Chemical Co. Ltd. and Zhenjiang Qianjin Chemical Co. Ltd. Global players include Addivant USA LLC, Songwong Industrial Co. Ltd., Pau Tai Industrial Corporation, Akzonobel N.V., and Clariant AG.
