Oscillators based on the SAW (surface acoustic wave) technology in general offer lower noise compared to the conventional crystal oscillators at higher frequencies. VASO (Voltage-Controlled SAW Oscillator) can be an important component in the phase lock loop (PLL) subsystem for clock and data recovery (CDR), clock smoothing or frequency translation in the SONET/SDH (Synchronous Optical Network / Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) fiber-optic communication systems.

SAW Voltage Controlled Oscillators (VASO) have been used for many years in telecommunications, military, and commercial applications requiring low phase noise and jitter at fundamental frequencies up to 1000 MHz. They have flown in space, on aircraft, on missiles, and have been a main component in modem telecommunications systems.

VASOs use a quartz SAW delay line as the frequency controlling element. The SAW delay lines are fabricated on a 0.5mm thick quartz wafer using planar processing similar to that of an IC. The frequency selective aluminum pattern is on the surface of the quartz allowing the delay line to be securely mounted in its package. This construction provides a small and rugged resonant element, that when used in a VASO, results in very low vibration sensitivity.

Frequency of a SAW delay line is very linear giving VASOs very linear and repeatable tuning characteristics. In many applications VASOs are used in a phase lock loop (PLL) to lock the VASO to a stable low frequency reference, reduce reference jitter, or track or filter reference modulation. The linear tuning characteristic is critical in many of these applications.

Ovenized voltage controlled SAW oscillator (VASO) is extremely effective and reliable in applications involving use of analog signal processing, such as radar, communications, and electronic warfare (EW).
