Powetrain control module (PCM) is an electrical component used to control most of the automobile engine’s functions. It consists of the transmission control unit (TCU) and engine control unit (ECU). It is also known as Hybrid Control Unit in hybrid vehicles and Motor Control Unit in electric vehicles, respectively. 

Functions of PCM include adjusting the air-to-gas ratio for fuel efficiency. It monitors the ignition timing of spark plugs to function at an optimum rate. It is accountable for monitoring the current state of the automobile. It performs these functions by relying on the data of emission level, temperature, cam-shaft angle, oil and fluid level, and air intake sensors.

PCMs get regular software updates from their vendors. The ‘Check Engine’ light flashes if the PCM detects any errors in the functioning of the engine.  

The powertrain control module market is expected to soar owing to energy consciousness and adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles. End users of these devices prefer alternative fuels like CNG (compressed natural gas) and LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) over conventional fuels. 

The market is divided by fuel types, modules, electric components, vehicles, wheel drive, and regions. Fuel types include gasoline, diesel, CNG, LPG, electric and hybrid vehicles. Modules include engine, transmission, turbochargers, driveshaft, and differentials. Memory, sensors, microcontroller, PCB (printed circuit board), and power management integrated circuits (PMIC) encompass electric components. Vehicles using these components are light commercial, heavy commercial, and passenger. Rear wheel, front wheel, and all-wheel are the wheel types.

Asia Pacific is expected to dominate the powertrain control module market on account of government policies pertaining to driver safety. Growth of sensors and easily disposable income is predicted to result in increased market growth for this region. Europe is another major region expecting huge windfall on account of substantial safety regulations. The US has made it compulsory to install backup cameras in all new models. There has been increased demand for embedded vision systems capable of tracking real-time images.
