A feedthrough capacitor is a feedthrough terminal that provides a desired value of capacitance between the feedthrough conductor and the metal chassis or panel through which the conductor is passing. It is mainly used for bypass purposes in ultra-high-frequency circuits. Feed through capacitors are formerly designed for DC power line in RF module or system. It passed through the DC (and low frequency signals) but blocks the RF energy. In practical use the feed through capacitors are fitted to the metal case of the RF module on holes where the wires enter the system. They let the signal pass through but will stop the RF from absconding from the device through that hole to the outside wiring.

A feed-through capacitor in which a composite dielectric layer made of a varied material comprising a resin material and dielectric material powder is organized between a feedthrough terminal and an outer electrode terminal surrounding, a capacitance being formed between the feed through terminal and the outer electrode terminal. Feedthrough capacitors are used by making aincreasing hole in the shielding case and soldering the ground electrode directly to the shielding case (plate). Since this type of capacitor has no residual inductance on the ground terminal side as well as on the signal terminal side, it can provide nearly ideal insertion loss characteristics.

Feedthroughs can be divided into power and instrumentation categories. Power feedthroughs are used to transfer either high current or high voltage. Instrumentation feedthroughs are used to carry electrical signals which are normally low current or voltage. Another special type is what is commonly known as RF-feedthrough, specifically designed to carry very high frequency RF or microwave electrical signals. The global feedthrough capacitor market is segmented on the basis of product type, style, application, and region.

On the basis of type, the global market is classified into AC Feedthrough Capacitors, DC Feedthrough Capacitors, Tubular Feedthrough Ceramic Capacitors, Solid Feedthrough Capacitors, and Multilayered Feedthrough Capacitors. Feedthrough Tubular Capacitors: ideally suitable for by-pass and filteringapplications. Due to the cylindrical design, the capacitors will have uniform insertion loss over a broad frequency range. This structure yields a low inductance when compared to conventional wound capacitors. Solid Feedthrough Capacitors: have no internal electrodes and find their primary usage in low cost applications.

Multilayered Feedthrough Capacitors: have a higher capacitance to volume ratio and are ideally suited for greater filtering at lower frequencies. Multilayered feedthrough capacitors are also designed for applications where source impedances are high and sharp attenuation rise is critical.
