Potassium oxide (CAS NO: 12136-45-7) is an ionic compound formed from potassium and oxygen. This white-colored crystalline solid is the simplest oxide of potassium. It is also known as dipotassium monoxide, dipotassium oxide, dipotassium carbonate, and dipotassium hydroxide. 

The potassium oxide industry is expected to grow on account of rising applications in various end-use industries. Potassium oxide is used as an adsorbent & absorbent. It also acts as an ion exchange agent. Its other applications include as process regulators and processing aids. 

Few of the leading consumers of potassium oxide are the adhesives & sealants industry, glass industry, and fertilizer industry. It is also a component of air care products, and building & construction materials. 

USA, Japan, China, and European Union (EU) are the main regional markets for the potassium oxide industry. Burgeoning worldwide population and diminishing cultivable land is creating demand for improving the yield per hectare. The rising food burden will favor growth of fertilizer industry. This will positively affect demand for potassium oxide. China is likely to be an important regional market from 2015 to 2020 (forecast period). 

Economic growth, booming population, and the presence of manufacturing operations of several end-users will propel market growth over the next five years. Expanding governmental funding for infrastructural development will fuel cement and construction applications of potassium oxide in the Chinese market.

However, potassium oxide is associated with some hazards. It reacts with water vigorously and generates enough heat to result in boiling and spattering of hot caustic solution. The compound’s combination with warm water leads to a violent explosion. 

Human contact leads to severe irritation of eyes, skin, & mucous membranes. Inhalation or ingestion results in toxic effects, albeit delayed. Authorities like OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) note that its fire may produce irritating, toxic and/or corrosive gases. 

Potassium oxide needs to be stored in a dry place, away from strong acids, foods, and feedstuffs. It is mandatory for manufacturers to provide protective gloves, clothing, face shield, eye masks, etc. to workers. These factors could increase manufacturing costs, which may prove disadvantageous to industry growth. Well-known participants in the Chinese potassium oxide industry are Shanghai Smart Chemicals Co.
